Our Sustainability Practices

At Boho-Magic we are committed to sustainable practices that ensure we are mindfully harvesting genuine gemstones from the earth and reducing our carbon footprint. Let’s explore some of our sustainability practices and give you a peak behind the curtain!

When we started our brand Boho-Magic almost 2 decades ago it was important to us that we created designs that would last a life-time. We wanted to create beautiful timeless pieces that reflected the beauty of the earth and we wanted to do it responsibly. We knew from the very beginning that in order to do that successfully, and consciously, we would need to have a sustainability plan to ensure that we were producing gemstone jewelry ethically.

To begin creating our plan of action, we started by thinking about the materials we wanted to use. We wanted to work with genuine gemstones, but we also didn’t want to over harvest from the earth and contribute to wasteful mass consumerism. We also wanted our jewels to last a lifetime, so working with a durable metal was a priority too. For our packaging, we knew it needed to be memorable so that our customers would set us apart from other brands but it also needed to consider the environment that we loved so much. So, we spent years fine tuning our production so that we could offer you an environmentally conscious and sustainable brand with gemstone jewels that will last a lifetime.

Here at Boho-Magic we have 3 pillars to our sustainability practices. Those 3 pillars are:

  1. Quality over quantity

  2. Environmentally conscious and ethical production

  3. Eco-friendly delivery

We are constantly evolving ourselves to make sure we are staying aligned with our 3 pillars of sustainability. Keep reading to learn how our sustainable pillars are integrated into our design, production, packaging and shipping!

Jewelry Design and Production

At Boho-Magic, we are a family run business based out of western Europe. We design all our jewels ourselves as a family and each piece is inspired by our love for nature. All our designs are unique to our brand Boho-Magic and are copyrighted to protect the uniqueness of our jewelry which cuts down impersonators stealing our designs and mass producing cheap knock-offs.

After our jewels are designed at home in western Europe, they are then produced with trusted artisans in India who specialize in sterling silver. We have been working with the same makers for many moons and they combine traditional techniques with modern sustainability values. These wonderful artists follow responsible manufacturing practices and fair labor standards. We only work with artisans who are producing and earning within fair working conditions. It is a top priority for us that our jewelry is not only high quality, but that our designs are ethically produced as well.

Metal Setting

One of our priorities when designing jewelry is that it stands the test of time. Every piece is made with .925 sterling silver and has a stamp to confirm its authenticity. .925 sterling silver is made with 92.5% sterling silver and 7.5% other metals such as copper or platinum. Silver is actually quite a soft metal, so adding that 7.5% of another metal makes it harder, more durable and ever-lasting.

By using a durable metal like sterling silver, we are ultimately reducing waste in the future because our jewelry will stand the test of time. There is no need to repurchase jewelry the same jewelry in the future. We have over 200 sterling silver and gemstone designs here at Boho-Magic and it’s taken us nearly 2 decades to build our look-book; One of our pillars of sustainability is that we prioritize quality over quantity so we release 2-3 small collections each year. We prioritize timeless silver jewelry that you can pass down to friends and family instead of indulging in fast fashion that instead focuses on quantity over quality.

Gemstone Harvesting

Our gemstones are mindfully harvested from the earth to ensure we can supply you with genuine gemstones without worrying about taking too many resources from the earth. But what does it mean to mindfully harvest from the earth? For us at Boho-Magic, it means that we work with trusted professional harvesters who only harvest what we need and no more. This is why we do small restocks frequently instead of doing one big restock and hoping that all the product sells. Our sustainable method of small restocks ensures that we only produce what we need and it also ensures that we never take too many gemstones from the earth. It is important that we never have product that goes to waste. In fact, one of our favorite in-store features is our out of stock notification system. If you sign up for a restock notification in your size, that tells us that particular product is in demand and we can guesstimate how much we need to produce for our customers so that we are not over-producing or over-harvesting.

Behind the scenes, all our gemstones are certified by the Geological Institute of America and we have also lab tested our gemstones to double check their authenticity. We do not use man-made or lab-grown stones, only natural ones harvested from the earth. So, again, our harvesting habits are key to remaining environmentally friendly, eco-conscious and ethical.

We have been working with the same stone harvesters for years and we source our stones from around the world in the following countries: India, Brazil, Madagascar, South Africa, Argentina, Afghanistan, Peru. When a stone is first harvested, it is in its raw form. Then, through production, the stone is cut into a gemstone that fits our design. We also try to source gemstones that look as close to photos used in our advertising as possible. Though, since our gems are genuine, there is always going to be a slight variation in appearance when compared to the photos on our website. This is why we have a 60 day return or exchange policy within the USA that uses ground shipping; ground shipping is the most economical option that keeps our carbon imprint at bay.

Shipping and Packaging

While our jewelry is designed and produced close to home overseas, our warehouse for shipping headquarters is in California. We recognize that the majority of our customers live in the USA and thus we have our shipping headquarters in California to ensure quick delivery times and a reduction in our carbon footprint. If we were to ship all our orders from overseas, we would be negatively affecting the environment due to the amount of fuel and energy required for air shipping. Since we ship from the US and the majority of our customers are in the US this ensures that we can ship via ground shipping instead of airplanes which have a much higher carbon emission rate.

For our packaging, we have produced our iconic turquoise boxes using recycled materials. While some of our jewels arrive in plastic bags within those boxes to ensure protection during travel, we are always working on ways to improve our sustainability and are committed to discovering even better solutions for jewelry packaging

Combatting counterfeit sellers

If you see our jewelry designs on any other website that is not Boho-Magic, please know that it is a knock-off. There are many websites out there that steal our photos and designs and then sell counterfeit items. All our designs are copyrighted which means we can reduce the amount of counterfeit production out there on the market, but there are always sneaky websites that find a way to steal our designs. When you purchase directly from our website, or our Etsy shop, you are receiving a genuine gemstone set in .925 sterling silver.

Charity Work

We are currently in the process of selecting an eco-conscious charity to work with so that we can minimize our environmental impact even more. While we have sustainable practices here at Boho-Magic, we want to ensure that we are doing everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint and give back to the earth that provides us with our gemstones. Stay tuned for charity updates!
