For many years now, our customers have chosen aquamarine as their most favorite gemstone making our teardrop aquamarine ring our best selling product at Boho-Magic. But, why is this stone so magnetic? Why does its beauty put our customers under a spell? We’re about to reveal all the magic that aquamarine holds and why it has consistently been our best seller!

Aquamarine is a stone with varying blue and green shades that mimics the presence and power of water. And, like water, aquamarine stones have a peaceful, calming and inviting energy that is simply irresistible. It’s name, aquamarine, means “water of the sea” in Latin; ‘aqua’ means water and ‘marina’ means of the sea. So, since it’s discovery, the beauty of this stone has intuitively invoked the memory and magic of water.

Aquamarine might be beautiful to look at, but it’s scientific make up is also quite interesting! Aquamarine is a type of beryl mineral which contains the elements beryllium, aluminum and silicon. Beryl minerals are typically colourless but this gemstone contains iron and when mixed with this mineral, a blue and green hue is created! Other coloured stones that are beryl minerals retain their colour in other ways. For example, emerald is also a beryl mineral it gets its dark green hue from either chromium and/or vanadium. Beryl minerals, like aquamarine, are known for their durability and hardness so this stone is a wonderful option for jewelry that you want to last a lifetime.

Now that we understand the basics of aquamarine, let’s dive a little deeper into some of it’s most appealing qualities!

1. Aquamarine symbolizes the element of water

As we briefly touched on, aquamarine was named after the element of water and its named means ‘water of the sea.’ Many gemstones are linked to the different elements fire, water, earth and air and this connection is often made by the colour of the stone. Aquamarine can vary in hues from blue to green, mimicking the different appearances of water. This stone is often placed on altars to represent the direction of west and the element of water and it is also embraced by those who love the ocean and the creatures that live within it.

2. Aquamarine is a water safe stone

Aquamarine not only represents water, but it’s scientific structure and composition make it safe to wear in the water for long periods of time. On Mohs Scale of Hardness aquamarine is rated a 7.5-8 out of 10, making it a super hard stone. It’s hardness rating also means aquamarine can be worn in the water safely and there are no concerns that the stone will change with long term water exposure. At Boho-Magic, we use sterling silver which is resistant to tarnishing; and, if it does tarnish, due to exposure to the elements, a simple silver cleaner can shine it up for you! If you do wear your aquamarine sterling silver gems in the water, we recommend checking out our article on how to care for and clean your jewelry. While aquamarine is safe to be in fresh and salt water, sterling silver can react to salt so we love to educate our customers on how to keep their jewels shining like brand new!

3. Aquamarine has ancient folklore

Historically, aquamarine was used as a good luck charm for sailors and fishermen. Aquamarine was typically brought onto vessels to protect against storms, wrecks and any form of bad luck that could endanger the men aboard a vessel. It was also thought to be a charm to ward off sea sickness.

In folklore, we also may hear tales of aquamarine being a favorite amongst the mythical mermaids of the sea. In fact, the ancient Romans believed that aquamarine was mermaid treasure and if found along the seashore it was a blessed gift from the Gods.

4. Aquamarine has purifying abilities

Every gemstone has unique energetic and spiritual characteristics. Aquamarine is coveted for it’s ability to purify energy, in the same way that water can. This ability is attributed to aquamarine primarily due to it’s symbolism and the belief systems, or folklore, that have been attached to this stone over the centuries. It is believed that aquamarine can cleanse and purify our emotions, our bodies and our spaces. So it’s ideal for someone who has the intention of purifying their aura each day or resetting their physical space.

You could even place your aquamarine stone in your water to allow it’s energy and essence to cleanse your water of impurities.

5. Aquamarine brings clarity

Along with it’s purifying superpowers, aquamarine is coveted for it’s ability to bring clarity to any situation. Physically, light passes through this stone beautifully and can create optics of light just as bodies of water do when the sun’s rays are reflecting off their surfaces. This core aspect of aquamarine’s essence makes it a great tool to help you, energetically and spiritually, gain clarity regarding a situation or thought form. If you need help with focus, creating peace, communication or working out a problem try surrounding yourself with aquamarine and witnessing how it’s energy positively affects you.
