Ruby is one of the most beautiful gemstones on the planet, and one of the most desired. Over the years, we’ve designed a handful of ruby jewels and have always been very intentional with those designs because it is such a special and rare stone to wear.

It’s stunning red tone is a symbol of feminine beauty and it’s name also derives from it’s red hue. The word ruby descends from the Latin word ‘Ruber’ which means red. Ruby jewels have been worn for hundreds of thousands of years and is so rare that wearing it was considered an honor worthy of ceremony. Historically, soldiers wore rubies as a symbol of protection and women wore it as a symbol of passion and fertility.

Ruby is the birthstone of July because it represents the passion and heat of the summer. It’s a stone that is very grounding and feminine during such a heightened masculine time of the year. Typically, for those of us in the northern hemisphere, the summer sun is thought of as the height of masculine energy; so, the femininity of ruby brings us a beautiful balance in July.

Before we jump into the metaphysics of ruby, let’s first learn a bit about its science! A ruby is so rare and expensive because naturally it can take 20 to 30 million years to form within the earth. There are only a handful of locations that rubies can be found and some of the most popular places are Myanmar and Mozambique. Rubies are incredible hard in comparison to other popular stones like quartz. For example, on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, a ruby is a 9 out of 10 whereas quartz is a 7.

“Rubies are scientifically known as corundum, a rock-forming mineral and crystalline form of aluminium oxide which is two aluminium atoms and three oxygen atoms (Al2O3) in a close packed hexagonal structure. Corundum typically contains traces of iron, titanium, vanadium and/or chromium. All colored gems have a corundum base which on its own is naturally transparent, but the transparency begins to display various colors when these trace elements are present. Chromium imbues corundum with its red color and forms what is commonly known as a ruby.”
