2. Moonstone is a type of feldspar

Feldspar is the name of a common group of rock-forming silicate minerals that make up over half of the earth’s crust. All minerals within the feldspar group fit a generalized chemical composure which make them identifiable to this group.

Moonstone is composed of two feldspar minerals called orthoclase and albite. According to geologyin.com, the process that occurs after these two minerals mix and cool creates the adularescence that is unique to Moonstone. They state that, “…as the newly formed mineral cools, the intergrowth of orthoclase and albite separates into stacked, alternating layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions producing the phenomenon called adularescence.”

3. Moonstone gets its name from its appearance

This stone gets its name from it’s appearance: a bright aura of light beneath a cloudy exterior. As we mentioned above, the adularescence in Moonstone creates a light affect that is reminiscent of moonlight; this adularescence can create different shimmers, colors and visuals of light. It’s a stunning phenomena that is unique to Moonstone, giving it its beautiful and cosmic name.
